Honorable Mention
To Hint at Namaste
Gary Blankenship

I turn at the sound of your bare feet
crunching gravel this frosty morning.

I turn, but you are not there.

I start at the snap of your whisper
from new growth beneath the eaves.

I flinch as your murmur dies unheard.

I jump at your touch on my shoulder,
your breath warm as fresh bloomed iris.

I smart, my skin cold as an evening tide.

I return your bow.
Your flight is not due for hours,
there will be time enough
for chocolate and cheese
after you disturb my sleep
tomorrow

The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you. Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you."
